Moab's Bottle Brick Bench Work Party
Sunday, March 18, 2012 01:00pm - 10:00pmWe invite students, artists, educators, and all members of the Moab community to join hands (and feet) to build Moab’s first Bottle Brick Bench!
A bottle brick bench empowers youth and community members to clean up the environment, re-purpose their trash into a building material, learn natural building techniques, and then create a communal gathering area— an earthbench—where they can share music, share stories, and share life. For more information on bottle bricks, please visit: http://www.earthbench.org
Everyone is encouraged to make their own bottle brick (see posted flyer about how to build one) in the weeks before this event to turn your plastic waste bound for the landfill into a beautiful community art piece. If you bring a bottle brick to a member of Pick Up America before the 18th we will give you a free up-cycled Pick Up America t-shirt!
This event is family-friendly, free and open to the public. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to stop by the youth garden for a few hours to turn our bottle bricks into a bench and learn natural building techniques from eco-artist Brennan Bird of The Peace on Earthbench Movement.
We will be hosting a potluck meal around 11:30 am and at 6:00 pm to break bread with new friends. If you can, please bring a dish to share with our hungry builders!
We will also host an Open Mic for people to share their creative talents, and to keep the event lively, from 2 pm - 5 pm. If you would like to bring an ensemble and perform, please comment on this page and we will confirm a slot for you. Walk-ups are also encouraged!
This event is a collaborative effort between Pick Up America, Arches National Park, The Peace on Earthbench Movement, The Youth Garden Project, Wabi Sabi, Canyon Lands Community Recycling, Community Rebuilds, Moab's Multicultural Center, and mosaic artist Erin Trim.
The bottle brick bench is being organized to commemorate the start of Pick Up America's third year on their journey to "walk across the country and pick up trash." Over the course of two years, the group has already cleared more than 72 tons of litter from over 2,000 miles of American highways! Denver by November!
Friday, November 04, 2011 10:00pm - Sunday, November 06, 2011 02:00amPick Up America is quickly approaching Colorado. All year, our matra has been "Denver by November," and it looks like we're gonna need some help to fulfill this dream. Here's the plan:
We are hoping to cover 100 miles of Rt. 36 in eastern Colorado in just one weekend by getting 15 to 20 people together for a camping/sleeping-in-a-church trip. We'll sing songs, cook huge community meals, enjoy nature, and pick up some trash to help our friends at Pick Up America get to their resting place in the Denver/Boulder area. PLEASE bring a warm sleeping bag! We'll be sleeping in the church and in the Pick Up America bus.
We'll be staying at Liberty Baptist Church in Joes, Colo. It's less than two and a half hours from Denver and 30 miles west of the Kansas/Colorado state line. If all goes as planned, we should be just a weeks walking distance from Denver by the end of the weekend.
Here are directions from Denver:
Take Rt. 70 east to Rt. 36 east. Liberty Baptist Church, located at 7967 US Highway 36, will be on the right.
CARPOOL: Post something below if you're looking for or are able to provide a carpool!
