Putting zero waste on your mind isn’t enough for us. So, we decided to produce a few well-researched toolkits to help you get started on your zero waste life. Check them out. Maybe you can help your home, your favorite restaurant, or your business transform into a green icon in your community. Take a look, and take a stand. It’s time to think critically about how our communities use our finite natural resources.

Pick Up America is the nation’s first coast-to-coast roadside litter pickup. Our mission is to pick up trash across the country, educate, and encourage a transition toward zero waste. Through community litter clean-ups and outreach events, the Pick Up Artists encourage alternatives to our nation’s throwaway mentality. The trek began at Assateague Island, Md., in March 2010 and plans to span 13 states to the San Francisco Bay in November 2012. Come walk a few miles, will ya?

Single-Stream is a way to recycle. You fill up a bin with many types of recyclables. Then that bin gets dumped into a “stream” of other recyclables, and each resource gets sorted out at the recycling center. Single-Stream is a convenient way for consumers to recycle resources. We call our blog Single-Stream, ‘cause we also throw a bunch of stuff (blog content) together into a “single-stream.” You’re the recycler. Go ahead, sort through our blogs and find what you like! Don’t be afraid to contribute as well :)

We pick up trash most of the week, but our path across the country is all about connecting with the locals. As much as we’d like to advocate for a culture of less waste, we can’t succeed without your community involvement. As a team of professional volunteers that are unfamiliar to your town, we could sure use a few helping hands. Can you take a look below to see how you can get involved? Please & Thank You!

The throwaway lifestyle affects whole communities and ecosystems. That’s why we pick up roadside litter and show people what we find, but it's not enough for our story to be heard through the press alone. Our project is focused on raising awareness and empowering communities to transform themselves. Let us meet your community and be a part of it. We've partnered with local groups across the country to help spread our zero waste message and hear what others have to say. Come out for an event or help us plan one. We’d love to meet you and hear about what’s happening locally.

We're walking across the country picking up trash because it's fun! Well, we are having a good time, but really we are walking across the country to draw attention for the zero waste movement. Being the social pick-up artists we are, we've amassed quite a bit of collaborated art, poetry, photo albums, videos, and more. Also, take a look at the press coverage we've received!

Over consumption and a throwaway attitude is what keeps our communities and ecosystems littered with waste, but here are some products that we like. They are durable and reusable and are produced with our environment in mind. Buy from our store and you'll not only support sustainable products but you'll support Pick Up America!

Find out more about us at www.pickupamerica.org.

We invite students, artists, educators, and all members of the Moab community to join hands (and feet) to build Moab’s first Bottle Brick Bench!
A bottle brick bench empowers youth and community members to clean up the environment, re-purpose their trash into a building material, learn natural building techniques, and then create a communal gathering area— an earthbench—where they can share music, share stories, and share life. For more information on bottle bricks, please visit: http://www.earthbench.org
Everyone is encouraged to make their own bottle brick (see posted flyer about how to build one) in the weeks before this event to turn your plastic waste bound for the landfill into a beautiful community art piece. If you bring a bottle brick to a member of Pick Up America before the 18th we will give you a free up-cycled Pick Up America t-shirt!
This event is family-friendly, free and open to the public. Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to stop by the youth garden for a few hours to turn our bottle bricks into a bench and learn natural building techniques from eco-artist Brennan Bird of The Peace on Earthbench Movement.
We will be hosting a potluck meal around 11:30 am and at 6:00 pm to break bread with new friends. If you can, please bring a dish to share with our hungry builders!
We will also host an Open Mic for people to share their creative talents, and to keep the event lively, from 2 pm - 5 pm. If you would like to bring an ensemble and perform, please comment on this page and we will confirm a slot for you. Walk-ups are also encouraged!
This event is a collaborative effort between Pick Up America, Arches National Park, The Peace on Earthbench Movement, The Youth Garden Project, Wabi Sabi, Canyon Lands Community Recycling, Community Rebuilds, Moab's Multicultural Center, and mosaic artist Erin Trim.
The bottle brick bench is being organized to commemorate the start of Pick Up America's third year on their journey to "walk across the country and pick up trash." Over the course of two years, the group has already cleared more than 72 tons of litter from over 2,000 miles of American highways!
